DREGS Presents: Archean Geodynamic & Metallogenic Processes with Dr. Ben Frieman

Our guest is Dr. Ben Frieman, a Research Assistant Professor at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. His talk is titled: Archean Geodynamic and Metallogenic Processes: Perspectives from the Southern Superior Province, Canada . Abstract: Constraining the factors that contribute to variable copper and gold metal endowment in the crust is critical for understanding the size and distribution of deposits of all ages, worldwide. This talk explores these factors through multi-disciplinary investigations conducted as part of the Metal Earth research initiative in Canada. This work was focused on the Archean Superior Province where similarly aged Archean domains display a disparate amount of known base and precious metals, typified by the well-endowed Abitibi subprovince and the lesser-endowed western Wabigoon subprovince. New integrated mapping, (isotope) geochemical, and geophysical results indicate that more prospective domains within these subprovinces contain dominantly juvenile crust with translithopheric structure which promoted a more direct crust-mantle connection coeval with their formation and tectonic modification. In contrast, less prospective areas contain a complex and protracted history of crustal growth and modification that spanned 100s of millions of years. These results indicate that exploration programs would benefit from incorporating more robust, broad-scale tectonic investigations in order to improve prospectivity constraints. Recorded on January 10, 2022.
